As a devoted film photography enthusiast and dedicated darkroom artist, I've dedicated countless hours to bringing my captured moments to life on paper. Over time, a substantial collection of darkroom prints has found its place, either adorning my walls or nestled safely in boxes, eagerly awaiting the chance to be displayed. When I first set out to write this blog, my intention was to explore various ideas for showcasing my work. However, as I delved into the possibilities, I couldn't help but feel that none of the conventional approaches truly resonated with me.
The notion of arranging an exhibition space in a gallery or artisan cafe seemed overwhelming, detracting from the intimate essence of my craft. The idea of replicating my prints in a 'zine' left me with a sense of unease, as it threatened to diminish the authenticity and uniqueness of each creation, leaving the originals confined to their boxes. As for spending hours behind a craft fair booth, engaging with potential enthusiasts, I realised that it didn't align with my true artistic purpose.
In my contemplation, a profound realisation emerged - my passion lies not in seeking external recognition or appealing to a wider audience. Rather, it resides in the very process of creation itself. My darkroom prints are not mere commodities meant for mass consumption; they are personal manifestations of my artistic vision. I find joy in the act of printing, immersing myself in the creative process, and finding fulfilment through each stroke of light and shadow.
While I acknowledge that my prints deserve to be showcased beyond the boundaries of boxes, my heart pulls me in two directions - to the field, where I can immerse myself in capturing new images that ignite my soul, or to the darkroom, where I dance with chemicals, filling more boxes with new works that represent my growth, learning, and artistic evolution.
As my surplus prints rest patiently in their boxes, I find contentment in knowing that they await my undivided attention when the time is right. Until then, I am drawn to the artistic journey - one that cherishes the process of creation over external validation.
